Introducing Lower Sackville Chiropractor Dr. Glenn Guilderson
Simply put I was a skeptic. My mother was going to a chiropractor for her frozen shoulder and was experiencing amazing results. I was in my 20's and thought I was as healthy as I could be and couldn't benefit from a chiropractor. He asked me if I had low back pain. I realized I "only" had pain after a long shift as a cashier, or a busy weekend working for a landscape company, or in the summer baling hay at my grandfathers farm. The chiropractor showed me that my back wasn't as healthy as it could be because subluxations were making it vulnerable to injury. Until I started getting adjustments I didn't realize how strong I really was!
Around the time I met my mothers chiropractor I was going to Dalhousie University and knew I wanted to be in the health care field. I thought maybe medicine, maybe dentistry. I spent an afternoon job shadowing my family doctor and I realized he was a good man who became a doctor to help people but was frustrated that his job was more about giving drugs than giving hands on service to his patients. My dental job shadowing was also eye opening. I learned that people don't look forward to seeing their dentist. My mother's chiropractor had a waiting room full of people who were looking forward to getting an adjustment. They were happy to be there because they knew they were going to feel great.
As soon as I decided on chiropractic I knew I had to work hard to get there. The educational requirements are the same as in med school so six years at Dalhousie and four years in Toronto to get my Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine in 2001.
I began my practice working with another chiropractor. These were three years spent gaining experience with patient care. With my growing practice I realized it was time to open a new office so we moved to 271 Sackville Drive in 2003. Seven years later I still love being a chiropractor. I love helping the grandmother who didn't think she could ever lift her grandkids. Or the child who thought weekly headaches were normal.
Speaking of children, outside of practice my happiest moments are spent with my wife and our little guy Max. I love how he tries to help me make eggs for breakfast by getting a spatula out of the drawer and standing on his toes trying to reach the frying pan. Or in the summer time on the beach when he tries to eat sand only when he knows we're watching. Max got his first adjustment when he was only a few weeks old. It helped his sleeping so much that all my wife's friends started bringing their newborns in to see if their kids could be helped. It still amazes me how such a gentle little adjustment can help so much. My wife gets regular adjustments to prevent headaches and I get an adjustment twice a month because being a chiropractor can be hard on your back.
